Who clicked, who watched — OTTs eye real engagement metrics

Charu Malhotra, Co-founder & Managing Director, Primus Partners, shared her view that completion rates across streaming platforms vary significantly, with well-performing series typically seeing 40–60% of viewers finishing a season, while many titles fall in the 10–25% range. She noted that movies tend to perform slightly better due to their single-sitting format, yet even there only a fraction of viewers complete the full runtime. Malhotra added that low completion rates pose a challenge for platforms, as they directly influence recommendation algorithms, renewal decisions, and the return on investment for long-format content, making it harder to justify higher commissioning budgets.
